Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a gentle and powerful psychobiological method for addressing physical and emotional trauma, PTSD, overwhelm and stress-related conditions.
Dr. Levine developed this approach after observing prey animals in the wild whose lives are routinely threatened in the wild, yet are readily able to recover by physically releasing the energy they accumulate during the stressful events.
Human beings on the other hand, often over-ride these natural and innate processes which regulate the nervous system by feelings of shame and pervasive thoughts, judgements and fears. Somatic Experiencing helps people move past the places where they may have become stuck or shut down as a result of the overwhelming event.
There are several thought provoking books on this subject that I highly recommend. Below you'll find a few that I personally found most inspiring. Please follow the link below for additional information and resources.
